Day 8 - Documenting Physical Food and Spiritual Food

Isaiah 55:2 is one of my favorite verses - you see it at the top of this blog as written in The Message.  It really challenges me to document how I am "spending" time, money, and calories - the life that God has given me - to care for this temple as stated in 1Corinthians 3:16  "Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?"

No matter what Bible version you read the Isaiah passage from there are two basic questions and a challenge.  The first question asks me why I spend money on things that do not bring nutrition to the body.  The bottom line has always been the same - seeking fulfillment, satisfaction, (and somewhat reluctantly I admit) attention and affection.  My goodness - that is giving those things a lot of expected power isn't it.  Power nothing natural can ever supply - only God can do those things, so if I am seeking those things before God and in the place of what only God can provide am I not replacing God and making them my idols as I run to (chocolate or whatever) to comfort me or encourage me?  What a pity.

The second question is similar - why do I work so hard, labor over things that do not satisfy.  I have just in the area of food, wasted at least several years trying to make my body what I think it should be, and it's true I've never been satisfied more than temporarily.  That is not even real satisfaction then, if it fades.

Of course the reverse thought is then why not spend my money and time and labor on things that DO satisfy.  The latter part of the verse says just that: Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.   When I break down the verse I hear this:  Quit clamoring and listen.  Then not just listen to anyone or anything or everything - but listen to ME.  God is telling me, guiding me to eat what is good - physically and spiritually, and he promises not that I might or could, but I WILL delight in the richest of fare.  I can 'promise' from my experience with The Lord's Table that you hearing God speak to you brings delight richer than you could imagine.  Feast with the Lord first, and he will bring your body satisfaction as well.

Documenting on this blog is helpful, but of course not everyone would be led to do this.  You can document through the class The Lord's Table and your assigned mentor, and/or in a notebook.  Spiritual food should also be documented.  The more senses you use, the more you learn and recall, so write it down, read or sing out loud and listen. I like to use the yesterday format.  Write a note today of what happened yesterday.  What I read, what I sowed to myself (God's temple), what I sowed to others, and the goal or prayer for today. God has a wonderful plan for your life both here and now and for forever.  Eat up - taste and see.
