Day 79 - My Portion

My mind is often on my portion - my portion or lot in life, my portion of food - what is an appropriate portion - and what portion of myself I should be giving to people, things, and of course to the Lord.

Psalm 142:5 says "I cried out to Thee, O LORD; I said, “Thou art my refuge, My portion [Helki] in the land of the living." Portion is translated my share, my inheritance, my possession. Now that is quite profound - the LORD is my inheritance and HE is my share.  According to this passage God does not play favorites and portion out more of Himself to one person or another - for it says that HE is my portion.  A little earlier the psalmist says in 73:26 that "my mind and body may fail but God is the rock for my mind and my portion forever."

If I should weaken to compare my life or circumstance with others I can be encouraged instead - HE is more than I will ever need - HE is power over all and HE can use the portion of my life to bring joy and power.  Knowing Helki, my portion intends to use that very portion of my life to fulfill me, and  will bring me to praise Him that I don't get what I deserve. He gives all to me.  But what if I only hand over a thimble of me for Him to fill?  He does not reduce my portion according to my faith, or lack of it, but Psalm 16:5 says that He guards all that is mine until I offer Him complete access to His vessel.  Notice in my first sentence who and what is listed last.  Isn't that what we often do - examine our portion, ask for our portion, like Esau we want what we want when we want it (usually now if it is to our pleasure and never if it is to our pain).  A friend today said it makes her wonder is she is just spoiled to keep wanting her portion on demand.  Imagine a gathering at the reading of a will.  One woman is told what her portion is and she clasps her hands to her heart in excitement..  She leans over and whispers her joy to the person next to her, "I don't care what else is given, I don't need anything else.  I got the best portion."

Breakfast:  Easy over egg, surrounded with triangles of spinach perogi. Found the perogis at the Sara Lee Outlet store on 27th street in Milwaukee.

Dinner:  Coconut Chicken and red rice in sauce with Italian green beans. Seasoned with Citrus Grill seasoning from Sam's Club. Salad has romaine and spinach, mandarin oranges, pineapple, and coconut. Dressing is Tangerine Salad Refresher from WildThyme.  Delightful - think I will use that this summer for a chicken salad too.
